Electric Pressure Cooker Frequently Asked Questions

How full Should I fill my pressure cooker?

Do not fill the pressure cooker more than 1/2 full with food or more than 2/3 full with liquid.  When cooking foods that expand during cooking do not fill the unit over 1/2 full.

Do I need to add liquid before cooking in the pressure cooker?

Yes,  Add at least 1 cup of liquid.  If you have a larger size pressure cooker add at least 1 1/2 cups of liquid.

Are there any foods that should not be cooked in the pressure cooker?

Yes, foods such as applesauce, cranberries, pearl barley, oatmeal or other cereals, split peas, noodles, and pasta, or rhubarb should not be cooked under pressure in the pressure cooker.  These foods tend to foam, froth and sputter and may block the floating valve.

Can I use my pressure cooker to deep fry or pressure fry?

No,  It is dangerous and may cause a fire and serious damage.

My pressure cooker has a delay time function.  Are there any precautions I need to remember when using this setting?

You need to remember that perishable foods such as meat and poultry products, fish, cheese and dairy products cannot be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours or no longer than 1 hour when room temperature is above 90 degrees F.  When cooking these foods, do not set the delay time function for more than 1 to 2 hours.

Can I wash any parts of my pressure cooker in the dishwasher?

No, Always wash the pressure cooker thoroughly after every use, or if it has not been used for an extended period of time in warm soapy water.  Rinse and dry thoroughly.   The rubber gasket should also be washed in warm soapy water after each use.  Rinse and dry thoroughly.  The rubber gasket should be replaced by pushing it down inside the edge of the lid.  Make sure it positioned properly according to your manufacturers directions or the unit will not work .

Should I use my pressure cooker if the gasket is cracked?

No.  After a period of time the rubber gasket may shrink, harden, become distorted , crack or tear under normal use.  When this happens the rubber gasket should be replaced.  Contact your customer service department for a replacement gasket.

Do I need to clean the pressure regulator knob?

Yes, Unplug and after the unit has cooled, remove the lid.  Press down and turn the pressure regulator knob counter clockwise past the Steam setting and carefully lift and remove.  Using a small brush, check and remove any food particles that may be lodged inside the floating valve.   Replace the pressure regulator knob by lining the notches up to the inside wall of the pressure regulator chamber in the lid.  Press down and turn clockwise to latch.

How should I store my electric pressure cooker?

Store your pressure cooker with the lid resting upside down on the removable cooking pot.  This will protect the valves, knobs and pressure regulator on the top of the lid.  If the appliance is stored with the lid sealed, stale odors may form on the inside.
